Half or whole day
Best season: April - October.
The bus takes us from Brissago to Locarno railway station, from where, after a few steps, we reach the base station of the funicular to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso. In a steep ride, it takes us up to the impressive rock on which the church is built. Just behind there lies the base station of the Cardada railway. Fortunately, it accepts GA and Half-Fare travelcards - although the full price is definitely worth paying. This is because the modern, almost completely glass-walled cabin brings you to the high plain at 1340 m in no time. A noticeably cooler freshness invigorates the spirit and encourages visitors to explore the surroundings. The viewing platform, towering like a ramp into nowhere, against Lago Maggiore. One almost wants to jump from the platform into the water. However, the water is a little far below and a little far away, all the more so as Locarno, Losone and Ascona are located between.
The restaurant, a very well maintained children's playgrounds, grill points and hiking trails now compete with the option of taking the chair lift and climbing another 300 metres up to Cimetta. This is definitely worth doing. Up here you will find yourself already higher than the tree line and you will get an open, wonderful view on all sides.
How about a pizza from the wood stove? It is "buono-buono" and can be highly recommended! The prices are fair, the usual "height surcharge" modest, the view terrace in front of the restaurant spectacular.
For those who want to stretch their legs a little, we recommend the one-hour easy hike to the summit of Cima della Trosa at 1969 m. Even our 4-year-old son managed this with some good persuasion and a little "ski lift pull" on his arm.
The beautifully exposed path to the towering cross is easy. Nevertheless, it is a mountain path and decent footwear (solid sneakers or shoes with good grip and good sole) is highly recommended.
If you like sports, you can either continue in the direction of Madone or behind it in the direction of Alpe die Bietri and back to Cardada. From there, it is easy to descend on foot towards Locarno.
But watch out: The descent involves many ( well constructed ) steps. For the more comfortable traveller, the chairlift and cable car from Cardada are ideal for the return journey. On summer days the lift is open until 8 o'clock in the evening. In the winter at least until 7 pm. Because the Cardada is also open in winter and offers a small, but beautiful ski area, since the children's hearts beat high. provided there is snow!
All in all a great trip that is definitely worth it! From us: 5 stars!
The well-done homepage of the Railway Company provides all kinds of information. Of course you can also reach the base station of Cardada by car. But be careful: The parking lots are packed very quickly. And in the closer surroundings all public (paid) parking areas are limited to 3 hours, thus in principle not usable for the trip.
